How can one read data from European identity cards using smart card reader? [closed]
I am looking to read data from European identity cards using USB smart card reader. The purpose is to enable easier data input, e.g. when the customer is checking into a hotel. The data that I would like to read from the ID card are already printed on the card (first and last name, date of birth, ID card number, address...), so I don't need to access any privileged information or secret keys etc. - the purpose is not authentication.
I have successfully read these data using my Android phone and the app called "ReadID me", without the need to enter any PINs or install any middleware or certificates. It simply detects my ID card using NFC and reads the data.
What I am looking for is to do the same using smart card reader, the one where you insert the card into the reader and the reader is connected to the PC via USB cable.
However, there doesn't seem to be any freely available information of how these data are stored on the card itself. I did come across the solution for reading Belgian ID cards this way, but I don't know if it could be a universal solution ?
Therefore, I would very much like to know if anyone has any experience or information regarding this problem ?
